So, given that Monday was the 200th anniversary of Pride & Prejudice, I and some of my more literary friends have observed an unofficial Austen Week. The Beloved Husband and I have watched all of my favorite adaptations of Austen’s novels (although, ironically, not Pride & Prejudice – I’m an avid fan of the six-hour version, so it only gets broken out on special occasions… usually illness).

  • Sense & Sensibility with Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Hugh Laurie
  • Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam, and Alan Cumming
  • Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds

We’ve also been enjoying The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. It’s a modern adaptation of P&P via vlog. At this point, all of the major players have been introduced and Lydia’s story-line has reached its climax. The acting is superb, as is the writing. Despite the myriad of changes that have been made to successfully adapt the story to the modern-day and to the vlog format, it is obvious that the writers and actors really respect and value the original work. As such, they have stayed so marvelously true to the spirit of the story that the changes do not grate.

So, it’s been a fun week, filled with Austen. All of these adaptations are worth checking out!
